Brenda DeBastiani, MBA, CRA, FAHRA, RT(R), gave an excellent presentation on HR processes to a room full ofleaders both old and new. Her session series (two-parts) covered key strategies to recruit, interview, hire, coach, and retain talent in imaging departments. Part 1 emphasized how to attract and hire for fit, with tips forinterviewing and consistent onboarding. Here are a few insights and tips we can all use when recruiting for our teams: ·Even though we are short staffed and have many open positions, we don’t have to just take the next warm body. It’s important to find the right fit for the role. ·Behavioral-based interview questions are a much more effective tool.·When interviewing, listen for "we." Did they do the work or did other members of the team? Ask follow-upquestions to clarify their role and effort. ·Listen for "would," as well. Did they actually do what they are talking about or are they giving a hypotheticalscenario of what they would do in a perfect world? ·It’s OK to make it awkward — allow for silence to get them to answer in detail. ·Money is not the "silver bullet" to keep employees. Though money needs to be competitive, managers holdmost of the keys to keeping the right talent. ·"You can improve the quality in your health system by keeping your turnover under 12%" —StuderBrenda provided wonderful examples of real-life scenarios to help us understand how to use various tools toimprove employee hiring and retention. you” for every bit of input someone shared with youbefore you responded. Yes, it was awkward at first, but in the debrief following, several attendees sharedhow saying “thank you” slowed their responses andfunctioned as a cross-check to ensure they trulylistened to what had been shared. One attendeeshared that, moving forward, perhaps the “thankyou” response doesn’t always have to be spoken outloud, but an internal voice as a reminder to make thisintentional connection. One of those tips, tricks, andtakeaways that only comes from hearing thecollective experiences and suggestions from ourmembers in such engaging sessions as this. As we moved through a total of four improvisationalexercises, one key takeaway was to think with a“yes/and” mindset to quiet the knee-jerk “no/but”reactionary response that can, at times, be so mucheasier when considering the inquiries, suggestions,or perspectives of others in challenging situations. We learned that having a “yes/and” mentality leavesoptions open, does not shut down the other person’sperspective, and seeks to learn more. This, in turn, improves the quality of interactions as both can thenchoose to explore options further. Another AHRAAnnual Meeting gem to take home! My favorite activity was called “The Store That HasEverything.” If you are in leadership, you can relate toeveryone believing you are the store that haseverything. Every answer, solution, and missing linkto a mystery, any equation — and your store isalways open, right? Well, even when people hope weare the store that has everything, we cannot possiblymeet every need or have every answer. It’s in thosetimes of challenge that we can lean into deliveringkindness, acknowledge another person’s perspectiveor frustration, and take ownership of the positivesolution. By doing this, we can add positive influenceand take ownership of those pieces with confidence. At the end of the session, Jenny asked whatattendees would carry forward. My favorite responsewas to stay curious. For me, a curious mind listens, considers alternate perspectives, accepts challenges Little did I know that as I mingled with so manyenergized, enthusiastic, and engaging attendees inthe New Members and First-Time AttendeeLuncheon today, I would meet Jenny M. Davies,FHFMA, CPC, ELI-MP, CLDS — or what serendipitousconversation that would be! At first glance, Jenny couldn’t have known I hadselected her session, “Building Emotional IntelligenceThrough Applied Improvisation,” weeks ago as thetopic for my Convention Daily article. I selected hersession purely because I am an emotionalintelligence geek and had been intrigued when hertitle blended this very important topic with laughterand quality communication — a trifecta for myleadership soul! It was a win/win/win. Segue to Jenny’s session three hours later, whereattendees were both entertained and drawn deeperinto her why for finding joy, the healing quality oflaughter, and choosing to not dull her sparkle orauthentic self as she embarked on her own healingjourney as an ovarian cancer survivor. Her ownlessons learned compelled her to form meaningfulhuman connections with the patients she had theopportunity to interact with at work. This may soundlike an easy takeaway, but with a role in healthcarefinance, the possibilities for these interactions can befew or far between. Jenny chooses to infuse joy andconnection into common situations such as assistinglost patients with wayfinding and taking action in herown life to make joy a priority. As the session continued, we were led through aseries of improvisational interactions with fellowattendees that challenged us to slow down, trulylisten, and connect with the person we werecommunicating with. One exercise was saying “thank By Wendy Renneke
as opportunities, and grows as a result. Thank you, Jenny, for giving us the opportunity to learn from you andyour why today! My challenge for all of us for the remainder of our week at the 2024 Annual Meeting is to seek joy, sharelaughter, make meaningful connections, and lean into your learning opportunities with a yes/and perspective— intentionally leaving doors open for new thoughts, perspectives, and growth!AHRA President Becky Allen, M.S., R.T.(R), CRA, welcomed attendees to Orlando and invited them to enjoy aninvigorating evening reception, the perfect way to cap off the first day of the 2024 Annual Meeting.
